Rehabilitation or rehabilitation therapy refers to the therapeutic and healing treatment that a patient receives after some serious illness or injury. The disease or the injury can be cancer, some cardiac arrest, or an automobile or any such accidents. There is also something called a drug rehabilitation therapy which is perhaps known by everyone. Drug rehabilitation therapy is a treatment that drug addicts receive that helps them to learn to live without depending on drugs. They are taught that they can be at their physical, mental and emotional best without relying on drugs. All forms of rehabilitation therapy have one goal which they wish to achieve. Rehabilitation therapies strive to help people recover from the challenges and problems and function at their best abilities. At a very basic level it can be said that the goal of rehabilitation therapy is to help the patient resume as active and healthy a lifestyle possible.

Rehabilitation therapy can be categorized into two major categories. The first category is that of the physical therapy. Physical therapy may include various activities such as exercise, tissue manipulation and various other treatments that primarily focus on maximizing the strength and the ability to function in specific body parts. Then there is the other category of rehabilitation therapy which is known as the occupational therapy. Occupational therapy, as the name suggests, concentrates more on the ability to work. This type of therapy focuses on techniques that prepare the patients to work on their normal and daily routine.


Rehab Physical Therapy

The physical therapy program of the rehabilitation therapy focuses on the strengthening of muscles and relieving pain. Thus for this reason physical rehabilitation treatments mostly include sessions for massaging and exercising for the patients. Many a times it happens that the patient is too fragile and fatigued to work out on his or her own. In case of such physically weak patients, there is always the assistance of a qualified physical therapist. The physical therapist helps the patient is gently his or her arms and legs in order to build up the lost physical strength and finally rejuvenate the patient. This was the case with the weak patients, while patients with more physical lifts are asked to build weights to build muscles. There are also other patients who have hurt themselves in an accidental manner. Such patients may need a cane or other supporting device that can help them with their walk. Rehabilitation therapy also thinks of those patients who use a wheelchair. Such patients are taught to do exercises that can be performed in the wheelchair itself in course of the physical therapy.

Speech rehabilitation therapy helps stroke patients and others with impaired speaking abilities. During this therapy patients relearn to communicate. Speech rehab is very useful to those patients as well who have lost their abilities to communicate such as patients with brain injuries. Drug rehabilitation may include several parts such as counseling and medication. Drug treatment centers offer residential drug rehabilitation therapy for at least a month and up to a year. Rehab therapists can also work together on a patient’s case in order to coordinate an effective therapy program.
