Large Cushion
66Large Cushions
Recently I was doing some home improvement, and when I wanted to spruce up my living room, I went on the hunt for some large cushions. I should have known that the term "large" is as subjective as can be, because I was able to find some cushions and pillows as large as my couch. When I was a kid cushions were used on couches and pillow fights, but now apparently they have many uses in all the rooms of the house.
Color me surprised! Large can mean whatever you want it to mean, so if you've dreamed of covering the floor of entire rooms in one large pillow, I'm sure you can find someone who has one big enough. You'd have to call it the floor cushion room, but I'll bet your guests would be amazed. They're almost like mattresses, but if you go a bit smaller, they can be used to decorate beds, or make that old chair sitting in the family room a bit more comfortable. Next time you're lounging with the fireplace lit, I'll bet you wish you had a large pillow underneath!
One crucial use for large cushions is for fort building. Even if you never built forts out of pillows, couches, cushions, and other household furniture (shame on you if you didn't!) it's never too late to start. Slide the table next to the couch and cover the gap with large cushions, crawl inside, and start planning how to annex the kitchen. Fort building possibilities aside, cushions of unusual size are great all over the house. Use it for support if you have a bad back, your kids can play with it, because kids love to toss cushions around (it is pretty fun), or you can prop yourself up against it and enjoy tv. I like to put some cushions down, turn off the light, play some nice music, lie down and close my eyes. If you're feeling adventurous invest in a large bean bag - these can be 10 feet plus in diameter, and may cost a lot for material and fill up, but there really is very little better than lounging about in a giant sack of foam. It's the ultimate in chairs that mold themselves to your shape for maximum comfort.
Large pillows and cushions are available in all sorts of shapes and sizes depending on the use you intend to get out of them. Need something ergonomic for an aging relative to use in or near bed, or in the main rooms? Get something rectangular or L-shaped so they have a good support system, and can act independently - no one likes to feel like a burden to others. Similar pillows are great for children as well, as a soft surface they can't hurt themselves with during play. If you want something to help out with seating for guests or lounging about with a few people, large chair cushion pads are the answer for you - the best part? Stackability. Just don't let kids climb them! The shapes get more complicated too, and can contour themselves to your individual shape using memory foam - which is great to sleep against, let me tell you. Sometimes with normal pillows your head and neck get the same level of support, when the head really needs less and the neck more. With memory foam in a large pillow, this is no longer a problem.
Large Cushions Material
Large cushions and pillows are mostly made of more durable materials than the regular pillows we're all used to - I think this is so they can stay together given their large side, but conveniently makes them great for outdoor and indoor use alike. Most are made of materials like polyester or cotton, but you don't have to look too hard to find them in leather, vinyl, or even denim - if you want to make your own, try using your old pair of jeans! There are many options when it comes to pillow filling material - mostly polyester and cotton, polysterene, and I've seen some with styrofoam. As before I recommend the memory foam if you're going to use it for sleeping purposes so the pillow molds itself to how you prefer to sleep.
Larger pillows are often more weather resistant the larger they get, and are fantastic for use as outdoor pillows on the garden or by the pool. Watch out, though, your kids might try and use them as boats. If so, make sure they pack oars and life preservers, the ship will soon be taking on water!
You have many internet options when shopping for large pillows - whatever the style, size, color, and material (and filling material) you're looking for, there will be an internet retailer that can handle your order. Unfortunately, that means you don't get to actually play around with your pillow before you get it, and with the size you're getting to with a large cushion, the shipping costs alone will be on the high side. I mentioned above making your own - if you're handy with the sewing machine there's no reason why you can't, and both save yourself a truckload of money and have a pillow that means even more to you than one you bought. For the rest of us that have less time on our hands, however, check around local stores, see what you like, then head to the internet and see if you can get a good deal on the cushion of your dreams.
