Kitchen Canisters

People these days are trying to spend more time in their kitchen. With the rise of popular cooking shows like Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations, Top Chef, and the entire Food Network, more and more people are discovering the joys of cooking and preparing great meals to enjoy with friends and family. Despite the troubles of the economy and the demands of work and the rest of life, there is simple pleasure to be had in taking raw ingredients and cooking up a storm till you have a tasty and (hopefully!) healthy meal. As such, people are taking the time to make sure their kitchens are equipped with the right kitchen accessories, tools, utensils, and storage devices to make sure the cooking process is as efficient and easy as possible. However, pure utility is not prized nearly so much as usefulness and decor. Using kitchen canisters as containers to store ingredients as well as finished cooking results is a great way to keep things neat around the kitchen while keeping things comfy and attractive.

Having a good set of kitchen canisters is important chiefly because it allows you to keep dry goods the way they're supposed to be - dry. You may think things will stay dry out in the air, but moisture has a way of creeping in no matter how dry it feels outside. Thus the seal on kitchen canisters is really important as it allows you to rest assured that whatever you put into the canister will stay as dry as it was when it entered. As a pleasant side effect, you keep out unwanted insects and pests as well - and they might love cookies more than I do.

Also, if you're at all like me, which is to say, messy, especially in the kitchen, you'll want to have a good large set of kitchen canisters handy simply to keep all your ingredients handy. This was absolutely necessary when I was learning to cook and wanted to concentrate as much as possible on what I was heating, cooling, breading, sauteing, or whatever, rather than fumbling around looking for ingredients in cabinets and cupboards. And they don't take up too much space on my kitchen counter. If I happen to need more space on the counter itself, I just sweep up all my kitchen containers and plop them back down into the pantry, and now they're out of sight, yet still keeping things dry and fresh. Pantry organization problem: solved! They can even fit in the fridge in a pinch, and hold leftovers.

An important part of kitchen canisters that is often overlooked in the name of saving money is the seal between the top or lid of the canister and the container itself. Many people mistakenly take it for granted that all canister seals are created equal, but they are not. In fact, if you mistakenly buy a canister that doesn't have an air-tight seal, you may find yourself coming back to get a spoon or cupful of a certain ingredient days or a week later and found that insects or moisture have crept in and ruined whatever it was you were looking for, necessitating a trip to the grocery store. As such it's important to inspect the seals of any kitchen canisters you're thinking of buying, or read about them if you're shopping online. Look for silicone gasket seals as the best option, but keep in mind that rubber seals are almost as good.

The other question people don't often pay attention to is the material their potential new kitchen canisters are made of. This is easy if you finally find a set that looks just like the ones you've wanted, especially after a long search. However, still make sure they're made of the right stuff. Unfortunately, most of the time that means paying more for quality.

In the long run, though, well-made kitchen accessories are totally worth it, as they last longer and keep your food safer and cleaner longer as well. So, while you can still buy plastic kitchen canisters in a pinch, look for more durable an long-lasting materials instead if you can afford it. Plastic containers have a nasty habit of absorbing smells from the stuff they're holding, so in this arena, plastic is almost a nonstarter.

Glass kitchen canisters are really popular for one simple reason - the label on the container doesn't matter, all you have to do is look at it and you know what's kept inside! This doesn't help if all your spices or ingredients all look the same, but if that's the case, you've got bigger problems. The trouble with glass' transparency is that if you (or your kids!) have grubby and dirty fingers, glass kitchen canisters won't let you forget, they'll smudge right up until you toss them (OK, gently place them, since glass breaks so easily, and no one likes cleaning that up) into the dishwasher. That they can be cleaned in the dishwasher is a great benefit, though.

If you're willing to give up the see-through value of glassware, the next step is porcelain or ceramic kitchen canisters. These can handle a bit more regular use and abuse than glass cooking accessories, and don't really have any downsides to them. Lastly, if you like the modern style of kitchen or home decoration, you'll want to look at stainless steel kitchen canisters. These are stylish and modern, don't break easily at all, and usually are easy to clean as well.

Some of the most popular kitchen canister sets are from the KKAPPLE brand, no relation to the famous computers and iPod makers. KK-APPLE brand kitchen accessories are popular because of their bright colors and high quality finishes and construction. They come in complete sets, not just canisters, so if you choose you can deck out your entire kitchen in Apple products, which is especially great if you can't get enough of delicious Granny Smiths or Macintosh apples. Besides kitchen storage canisters, Apple brand makes mugs, glassware, tableware, oven mitts, place mats, stove covers, salt/pepper shakers, wall hooks, fridge magnets, curtains, cutlery, and many more great products I won't mention since this list is already getting long.

Most people use Apple kitchen canisters are used to store powdered goods like sugar, coffee, chinese tea, or salt, or baked goods like cookies and crackers. In fact, you could even store apples in them! The great thing about Apple kitchen accessories is that they all fit together with the same theme, so if you get a utensil set, or a multi piece kitchen set from the same brand, all your kitchen gear will match. Basically, if you're looking for a kitchen decoration theme, and want to evoke the sights, sounds, and (best of all) smells of Mom's kitchen on apple pie baking days, consider getting some KK-Apple brand cookware. And please save me a slice of apple pie. If, however, apples aren't your cup of cider, fear not, for kitchen canisters are available in all shapes, sizes (6 ounces all the way to 80 ounces), and colors (yes, even purple), so no matter what you're looking for, you can find it. Vintage, modern, themed, it's out there.

Other great brands to consider if apples aren't your thing are Snapware, Oggi, Woodsman, Crosby Taylor, Round, Polder, and Signature Housewares. All of these are available online or in stores.
