Become a Nutritionist

So you want to become a nutritionist? That's wonderful. Nutritionists help people by spending the time investigating diseases related to eating and nutrients and helping people suffering from illness to effectively manage their diets and improve their qualities of life through properly planned food. For those of you who are already interested in culinary arts, nutrition is a great way to mix a love of cooking with science and a desire to help people.

As a nutritionist you'll be responsible for the care, planning, and direction of a person in need's diet and meal plan. Working from a doctor's office, a hospital, hotel, a treatment center, or another medical facility, you'll make sure people are taken care of nutrtionally. Your patients will look to you to provide them guidance on how to improve their lives. Food and our relation to it defines the rest of our lives much more than we think, and people are finally starting to want to take more control of their digestion and eating, but don't have the knowledge and experience to make beneficial changes. So, they turn to the experts, which could be you!

If you become a nutritionist you can help people make proper diet decisions.

First things first

If you're still in high school but are sure you'd like to become a nutritionist, make sure you take and enjoy classes in biology, physics, math, health, and chemistry. After high school, first you'll need to get a four year degree, at least a bachelor's degree, in nutrition, dietetics, food service management, or food and nutrition, from an accredited college or university. As you can tell, nutrition is a field dominated by science and math, so if these subjects aren't your cup of tea, you may want to consider another line of work.

Nutrition Degree Online

Online degrees are available for nutrition, so do some research before making a choice. These classes will teach you to understand food and nutrition, the various interactions between nutrients and how they affect the human body. You'll also learn menu planning and how to work with people with specific dietary requirements due to illness or other conditions. Finally you'll develop cooking skills so you can directly use your new nutritional knowledge. It is a broad field that covers health information, biology and chemistry, as well as culinary and personal skills.

Nutrition Certification

Afterwards, there will be a pre-nutrition course to brush up on your nutrient knowledge, followed by a nutrition certification, as required by most states. This will involve passing a qualification exam, as well as a number of supervised practice hours in a clinical setting. Interacting with patients, planning and revising their diets, and seeing them through a course of treatment is a long, complicated, and involved process, and at the outset it's important to be supervised by a professional with at least a few years of experience under their belt. There are also national credentials available, as well as graduate and phD programs for those who want to get into the more scientifically rigorous aspect of nutrition.

It's highly recommended that you contact people already working in nutrition and make their acquaintance and ask them questions about what the field is like. The best source of knowledge is people already helping people. Networking and researching online making a commitment is critical if you want to become a nutritionist. It will be an incredibly important profession in the next few years as people grapple with increasing diabetes and other health complications related to overeating and improper nutrition.

I like learning about the health benefits of food. But I can not cook.
