Infant Acne
Have you lately brought your infant home from the maternity hospital and all of a sudden noticed that she has developed ugly red bumps which look bad on her pretty face? Fortunately when you see baby acne, there’s no reason to panic, as this isn’t a common problem with babies. And in most of the cases, these problems vanish naturally.
In general terms, this problem is known to be neonatal acne or baby acne. This problem usually occurs because of the rush of natural maternal hormones, which they remain exposed to in the womb. This is pretty much comparable with the problems adults encounter due to hormonal imbalances or triggers. And parents are left in deep anxiety as some babies keep facing this problem till they’re 6-months old!
Baby acne usually appear on the baby’s forehead, scalp area, nose and around cheeks. While this may occur as postules and blackheads, some babies undergo whiteheads. But all of these symptoms keep randomly occurring during the first couple of months. These problems might also make the baby’s skin to turn rough and/or red. But like said earier, though the baby might not seem ‘normal’ at this stage, there’s no need for the parents to worry about either.
There’s not much we can do about this problem, though. But it might help if you mildly wipe clean the skin surface of the baby. If the pediatrician says yes, then you can use some mild baby soaps during her bathing too. But there’s one word of caution here, stay away from using just any soap or lotion that sounds or looks good. And if you do use soaps, make sure you have gently wiped cleaned all of it, as the leftovers of even the mildest baby soaps can trigger a boost in the baby acne problem. And don’t even think of scrubbing her acne as this will only worsen her problems and sufferings.
Baby Acne Treatment
Some pediatricians recommend mild topical tretinoin medications. At times, they will recommend benzoyl peroxide for that affected area. But like said earlier, it’s better to absolutely avoid heavier topical medications onto the baby's skin. In some instances, the breakouts turn more pronounced whenever the baby is somehow annoyed and irritated. In some cases, breakouts are triggered by leftovers of breast milk her facial skin. In some instances, the general skin care products don’t suit the baby – especially if it is born with an ultra sensitive skin.
In addition, some babies out there face break outs that look like rashes but they are in fact - eczema. Thus, the primary solution here would be to correctly recognize whether it’s actually an acne case or a case of allergy. So it does help if you get things diagnosed first by the pediatrician. And if the professional pediatrician has confirmed the problem to be baby acne, then you can try the following cautions and remedies.
1. You can use mild and gentle soaps that are made especially for babies.
2. Consider using baby shampoos. But here again, don’t decide on your own, take the pediatricians’ permission first. But the thing is that, shampoos are made milder, since they carry lesser chemicals compared to typical soaps.
3. Make sure you are using only gentle detergents for cleaning the infant’s clothes.
4. Try to keep her as calm as you can, since fussing sometimes triggers her acne.
5. And just in case, the mild care seems to fail, you should see the pediatrician to figure out why the baby acne is worsening over time. This will help hopefully!
